1940 SEASON REVIEW
Philadelphia had a great 1940 season, ending with a heartbreaking one run loss in the final game of the season which cost them the pennant. Philadelphia had a potent offense led by star right fielder Joe Dimaggio who finished the year batting .304 with 31 home runs and 120 RBI. Third baseman Deb Garms led the team in batting with a .330 average, he also added 10 home runs and 104 RBI. While the offense was potent the pitching wasn't very deep. The Phillies did have the best pitcher award winner Dick Errickson, and a close runner up in Paul Derring. The two aces finished with a 49-23 record for the year, but after them their pitching was plagued by injuries and not very good. The 1941 Phillies team should prove to be worse than their 1940 counterparts. The Phillies lost Best Pitcher Award winner Dick Errickson to the Cubs in free agency but did manage to resign free agent pitcher Bill Lee. Lee had a lackluster 12-12 season with a 4.57 ERA for Philadelphia last year. The Phillies did select reliever Norm Branch in the amateur draft, and he should be able to help the bullpen but with their big loss in pitching and lack of improvement in hitting the Phillies should drop to the middle of the pack in the National League.
